Over the decades, theory <span>predict</span>ions have been
overestimating the nuclear beta decay rates, one of the most
ubiquitous nuclear processes in nature. This long-standing puzzle
was recently found to be solved accounting for missing
correlations and two-body currents using so-called ab initio
(lat.``from the beginning") nuclear techniques. On the other
hand, search for new physics beyond the Standard Model often
requires precision nuclear physics. For example, predictions on
the hypothetical neutrinoless double-beta decay, which would
reveal the unknown nature of neutrinos, are currently governed by
the uncertainty of nuclear matrix elements. With the progress of
ab initio techniques, this uncertainty can now be reduced to help
experiments in their hunt for new physics. In my talk, I will
explain what ab initio methods mean in the context of nuclear
physics and how these methods can be used to unravel long-standing
mysteries in nuclear physics.<br>
