Dear members,

You are all cordially invited to the physics colloquium tomorrow! The
event starts at 10 o'clock by FYS1, and the speaker will be Tero
Heikkilä from the Centre of Excellence in Quantum Materials. More
information is found down below.

Best,
Samuli

On the microscopic level of single atoms or electrons, the only way to
understand materials is quantum mechanics. Quantum mechanics also
provides the only way to understand electronic band structures arising
from the arrangement of atoms into regular lattices in solid materials,
and thereby predicting many basic properties of materials, such as their
electric and thermal conductivity, elastic properties, and color. Such
properties are inherently of single-particle nature and quite well
understood. However, there are characteristics of materials exhibiting
quantum effects in the macroscopic scale, and requiring a many-body
theory approach. In such quantum materials strong correlations, quantum
entanglement and topology become important concepts. Improved
understanding of such effects can help us tackle the major grand
challenges in materials physics, such as increasing the operating
temperatures of superconductors towards and beyond the room temperature,
finding ways to do topological quantum computing, and finding new
platforms for other new technologies. I will describe our new Finnish
Centre of Excellence in Quantum Materials [1], where eight research
groups from three Finnish universities and VTT employ modern
experimental, theoretical and computational approache to study quantum
materials and create new device applications based on them.
