Dear all,

welcome to today's physics colloquium,

Friday 11 March, at 10:15 in FYS1 Speaker:**Jan Petter Hansen, Univ. of
Bergen***
Title: *****Rydberg atoms - playground for quantum control,
information and test of fundamental constants****

Abstract:

Rydberg atoms are highly excited atoms which, according to Bohrs complementary principle, defines a transition from
quantum to classical mechanics: In certain aspects the dynamics is identical to a classical Kepler problem, in other
aspects nonclassical features dominates. They are characterized by large (up to micrometer) sizes, long lifetimes and extreme sensitivity to
electromagnetic fields. In addition the order of magnitude stronger interatomic interaction as compared to ground state
atoms opens for conditional operations and control.

Rydberg atoms also plays an essential role in the production of antimatter, and one example, where the ultimate goal is to
measure the gravitational constant for antimatter, will be given.

Best regards,

Kari Eskola and Ilari Maasilta
